Does Gatley need another supermarket?

When I grew up in Gatley we used t go to a great independent art-deco cinema. Sadly it closed years ago, and has remained empty ever since. No doubt it’s a listed building that his been conveniently left to ruin.

Well, now there are plans to resurrect it as a supermarket. Does Gatley really need another supermarket? Ignoring the HUGE Sainsburys up the road, and not so far away, Tesco, Morrisons, Tesco and Waitrose, there are already TWO co-operative supermarkets in the small village, plus plenty of independent shops.

What Gatley really needs is a nice, independent cinema.

we don’t need a supermarket at all!!!! It is a lovely village with a village feel to it and in the main there is a good variety mix anyway.

It would make good offices as it has parking behind it. It’s too small for a large player in the market and if the cheaper brands come in (Aldi/Lidl m- of which there are several nearby) it will kill off the village.

I know…let’s make it a cinema, how’s that for a revolutionary thought! If they can revive the Plaza in Stockport (a place which has a multi-screen cinema already I might add) then why not give it a go? You could screen a ‘classic’ film each afternoon, and then a current one in the evening. Personally I’d go there over a multiplex any time. Let’s bring back some individuality to our towns – the same goes for restaurants and shops – I’m bored of seeing the same old high street chains. Doesn’t anyone want to try anything unique and individual any more?
