Sure, everyone has a story to tell about how useless Royal Mail are - letters arriving late, not at all, parcels not being delivered, even though you were in, but the other day, they proved to me, that not only are they incompetent, but also untrustworthy. Incompetence is leaving a parcel on our front doorstep in the rain, like they did to us last week. Being untrustworthy, however, takes a bit more effort, or in this case less effort.
On Tuesday night, GastrGrrl and I came home in the evening and collected our post in the hallway. There was a letter, addressed to someone else, living at the same house number, but on the next street. That’s incompetent.
But, this letter had a label on it reading Recorded and Signed For!

The sender had paid good money, and entrusted Royal Mail to ensure that, what is presumably an important document, is safely sent.
Well, no-one had signed for this Recorded delivery, and it was delivered to the wrong address. Incompetent and untrustworthy. Be warned. Beware.
One assumes you steamed it open, read the contents, resealed it and then delivered it to the right place?
Tsk! Actually, I phoned the sender, who sounded like a frail, old gentleman. Having explained what had happened, he asked me to post it back to him, so he could complain - which I did. How ironic.
Why is the whole of Royal Mail incompetent just because of one lazy postman. I am a postman and I am sick of everyone at Royal Mail being tarred with the same brush as these lazy barstewards. I have never left a package outside, I have never not taken a packet out, I have never just posted a signed for item through the letterbox, I have miss posted items but I always leave an apology note on the rare occasion I do, after all everyone is capable of making a mistake. I am sure in your line of work there are lazy and incompetent workers would you like everyone in your company to be tarred with the same brush. If you do have a problem complain to the local delivery office manager, then to Royal Mail Customer Care (online), then Postwatch, your MP and even the 2 top bosses - yes they do answer emails.
Postman Pat. Thanks for your comments. You make some valid points. I’m sure the majority of postmen/women are conscientious workers and do care about the end customer. I am not implying that all Royal Mail staff cannot be trusted; merely that Royal Mail, as an organisation cannot.
In my line of work lazy/incompetent workers would be noticed and dealt with. I’m a software developer. If I’m assigned a bug to fix, then it is logged in a bug-tracking system. When I say it is fixed, someone tests the software. If I haven’t fixed the bug, it becomes evident.
Recorded delivery items have a bar-code on them. One therefore assumes that the item is tracked. I would expect that the postie has to log which items have been signed for, and which have not. It appears, that my postie is happy to ignore this process with no repercussion, which suggests to me that the tracking system is not robust. For this reason, the system cannot be trusted; Recorded Delivery cannot be trusted; Royal Mail cannot be trusted.
